VODA BRNO, s.r.o.

university spin-off company of Brno University of Technology

The activities of the university spin-off company VODA BRNO, s.r.o. are connected with the Institute of Municipal Water Management (IMWM) at the Faculty of Civil Engineering of Brno University of Technology (BUT). The owner of this company is Ing. Jan Ručka, Ph.D., who also works as a pedagogical and scientific employee at IMWM.

VODA BRNO, s.r.o. is a technology company specializing in pipe network hydraulics, hydraulic modelling and drinking water quality in water supply networks. It develops, manufactures and distributes the Astacus® technology on the market, which is used for automated testing of the hydraulic capacity of fire hydrants, for cleaning water pipes, measuring hydraulic quantities and water temperature in water-supply pipes. The technology is intended for operators of water supply networks, which enables them to carry out an efficient and economical method of pipe cleaning by controlled flushing in pipe-sections, and at the same time obtain a large amount of useful operational information about the flushed water supply network, which the company’s computer server automatically evaluates and reports.

VODA BRNO uses the title “spin-off company” on the basis of a license agreement with the BUT in Brno because it introduces into operational practice the invention of a flushing robot, which was developed at the BUT and patented in 2022 under patent No. 309183. The agreement with BUT obliges the company to transparent and ethical business with the possible involvement of BUT students. The company transfers part of the turnover to the BUT budget, which brings interesting funds to the university. Students can use the Astacus technology for their studies, preparation of bachelor’s and diploma theses, etc.
