Influence of different alternative organic substrates as fillings for green roofs on the quality of rainfall runoff. Sustainable Chemistry and Pharmacy, 2024, vol. 38, č. 1, ISSN: 2352-5541. https://doi.org/10.1016/j.scp.2023.100999.
This paper reviews and summarizes various feedstocks for biochar production, pyrolysis technology and conditions, and physicochemical properties of selected types of biochar. Since biochar has a positive influence on plant growth, fertilizer efficiency, and rainwater capture, showing its use as a stable organic component of the substrate is the main objective of this research paper. Conclusion of the review considers the usage of biochar as a substrate for green infrastructure in pursuance of its characteristics, limiting pollutants concentration, potential benefits and risks for the environment, water sources and occurring climate change. The review is based on the analysis of selected papers on existing research and case studies related to the use of biochar and the evaluation of the impact of biochar on the characteristics of growing medium.
  • Carnevale Miino, M.; Macsek, T.; Halešová, T.; Chorazy, T.; Hlavínek, P. Is the reliability of wastewater-based epidemiology affected by season? Comparative analysis with pharmaceuticals prescriptions. ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE AND POLLUTION RESEARCH, 2024, vol. 31, č. 7, ISSN: 1614-7499. https://doi.org/10.1007/s11356-024-32110-w
This work aims to evaluate the reliability of the WBE as a tool for estimating the consumption of pharmaceuticals in urban areas. Measured consumption back-calculated with a WBE approach was compared with prescription of pharmaceutical products as “control.” Moreover, seasonal influence on (i) pharmaceutical consumption, (ii) load of pharmaceutical products in the sewer system, and (iii) reliability of WBE was evaluated.

Pharmaceutical and narcotics monitoring in Brno wastewater system and estimation of seasonal effect on the abuse of illicit drugs by a wastewater-based epidemiology approach. Science of the Total Environment, 2023, vol. 164386, s. 1-35. ISSN: 0048-9697. https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S0048969723030073?via%3Dihub.
This work aims to (i) quantify PHA and NAR in the WW of the Brno metropolitan area, (ii) determine the effectiveness of the current conventional wastewater treatment plant (WWTP), and (iii) estimate the illicit drug (ID) consumption. 23 PHA and 9 NAR were frequently detected in the untreated WW and studied for their removal. One year monitoring was carried out to highlight a possible seasonal pattern with PHA and NAR load in WW, WWTP effectiveness, and illicit consumption. These results will be useful for water utilities, to enhance the knowledge about the presence and removal of PHA and NAR, and local and national authorities to evaluate and counteract the problem of ID abuse.
